What is ParkScan?
ParkScan is a community-initiated, web-based reporting system that tracks maintenance conditions in San Francisco’s parks and playgrounds. ParkScan has been helping improve neighborhood parks and playgrounds since 2003.

How Does ParkScan Work?
Community members’ observations, once reported via our web-based form, are sent electronically to the appropriate city departments for action. A tracking number is assigned to each report, and the responsible department is notified. Dangerous conditions are acted on immediately, and general maintenance issues are handled in short order. Capital repairs are scheduled as budgets permit.

Why do we need ParkScan?
San Francisco’s more than 200 neighborhood parks provide a wide range of recreational opportunities to residents and visitors alike. These resources need thoughtful care and upkeep. Our web-based reporting system was created in response to citizen dissatisfaction with park maintenance levels and frustration with lack of access to responsible staff.

Multiple-years of cuts in the Recreation and Parks Department budget have resulted in fewer resources to maintain and repair our park system. ParkScan provides information about park conditions from a customer standpoint to help the City and County of San Francisco plan and budget for a park maintenance program that is responsive to community priorities.

Who can use ParkScan?
Any park user can report observed problems via the ParkScan website (www.parkscan.org). In addition, ParkScan works with community groups to train volunteers to survey their neighborhood parks using San Francisco’s Park Maintenance Standards. ParkScan volunteers serve their communities as "extra eyes" on their neighborhood parks by sending observations on a regular basis.

How do we improve the standards?
ParkScan is the easiest way for park users to report conditions that can be tracked on our website. It’s also the only direct way to make the department aware of citizen priorities for maintenance and repairs. By collecting data on an ongoing basis about park conditions, ParkScan seeks to improve park maintenance standards in all San Francisco’s parks.

What are the San Francisco Park Maintenance Standards?
The City’s Controller’s Office has released the final Park Maintenance Standards and Evaluation Form. The law requires the Controller’s office to conduct an annual audit of the Recreation and Park Department’s maintenance using these standards. In addition, ParkScan is developing a web-based audit tool utilizing the Controller’s standards for quarterly evaluation.

Who funds ParkScan?
ParkScan is a project of the Neighborhood Parks Council, a San Francisco based, non-profit parks advocacy organization. The program is funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation of New York, with supplemental funding from the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund and the City and County of San Francisco.
